Chapter 1948

Could it be…

Drawing in a deep breath, Georgie steadied herself and looked Faye straight in the eye. “Faye, tell me—why did you push Belinda down the hill? You must have known that on such a steep slope, a single push could be fatal to her. If you didn’t hold some deep grudge against her, I cannot believe you would ever do something like that to her.”

Her tone grew serious. “Be honest with me. Why exactly did you do it?”

Faye’s teeth dug into her lip at that.

For a long moment, she said nothing. Then, her words finally spilled out. “Because ever since Uncle Lucas started seeing Belinda, he hasn’t treated me the same. He grew distant, pulling further and further away from me. It hurt me so much. So… at that moment, I thought that maybe, if Belinda were gone, Uncle Lucas might go back to treating me like before. That thought drove me to act without thinking.”

Georgie’s frown deepened at her daughter’s confession.

She looked at Faye. “You mean to tell me that simply because you wanted Lucas to treat you like before, you pushed Belinda down the hill? No… I don’t believe it’s that simple.”

Her gaze sharpened, cutting into Faye as her voice dropped low. “Tell me honestly, Faye… do you have feelings for Lucas?”

Faye’s pupils tightened the instant those words reached her ears, and her expression shifted uneasily.

It took nearly half a minute before she managed to respond, forcing her features into a stiff smile. “Mom, what nonsense are you saying? Uncle Lucas and I are family. How could I possibly have feelings for him?”

Georgie noticed her daughter’s strange reaction, a flicker of shock quickly flashing across her face.

She drew in a sharp breath. “Are you certain you’re telling me the truth? When Lucas and Belinda were married, the way you regarded Belinda was completely different. At that time, the one you disliked was Verena. But now, with Lucas showing affection for Belinda, your attitude toward Belinda has completely changed—you even went so far as to push her down a hill. Doesn’t that prove something?”

Her tone grew sharper with every word.

Faye’s breathing grew heavier, and deep inside her, panic churned violently. Outwardly, however, she kept her composure. “Mom, I admit I was wrong this time. Uncle Lucas is family, and it’s only natural for me to depend on him and want to be close to him. But I should never have felt jealous of the woman by his side—that was my mistake. I understand now that the problem was with my own thoughts. That’s my fault. But please believe me—I don’t harbor those kinds of feelings for Uncle Lucas. I’m just… too dependent on him; that’s all. You have to believe me.”

Faye looked at Georgie with a gaze that seemed completely sincere.

She knew she could never confess the truth.

If she admitted to falling for her uncle, her mother’s fury would be unrelenting.

She might even drag her back to Soling and forbid her from ever seeing Lucas again.

Faye knew her mother far too well. Admitting her feelings for Lucas was out of the question.

She had no choice but to make an excuse for her past actions.

Georgie’s brows drew together as she studied her daughter.

She couldn’t tell whether Faye was lying or not.
