Chapter 1924

Chapter1924

She lifted her gaze to Elwood, and a mocking smile curved across her lips. “Elwood, that’s not what you said back then. The only reason you’re speaking this way now is that you lost your memory and can’t recall the past. Otherwise, your attitude toward me wouldn’t be like this.”

Elwood’s brows knitted together. “Carola, can you tell me what truly happened back then? Why did you end up marrying someone else when you were still pregnant with my child? Was it just because… you were caught up in some scheme, and I failed to trust you?”

Carola bit down hard on her lip, choosing silence.

She had no wish to revisit the memory before him, for it was a wound she had long tried to ignore.

But then, Belinda’s words from before came rushing back to her.

Carola hesitated for a moment, then drew in a deep breath before speaking. “Elwood, I want to know… why have you stayed single all this time? Why did you never marry Tasha?”

Elwood’s frown deepened. “Why should I marry Tasha?”

He paused briefly, then continued, “Honestly, even I can’t explain why I’ve resisted marriage all these years. My mother and sister have pressed me countless times, but whenever the thought of marrying comes to mind, I’m filled with this instinctive aversion. It’s as if some voice inside me insists I shouldn’t get married to another woman.”

His gaze drifted slightly as his thoughts unfurled. “That’s why I’ve never married and why I’ve kept my distance from women. As for Tasha… yes, we’ve known each other for many years. Once, my mother even tried to trick me, claiming that she was my girlfriend. But I saw through her lie immediately. Even though I lost my memory, I can say with certainty—I have never had any feelings toward her and I never will. I feel nothing for her at all. If anything, I frown whenever I see her. I think, even before my memory loss, I probably disliked her.”

He looked at Carola. “Because of my mother’s fondness for her and her hope of making her a daughter-in-law, she keeps scheming to push us together. But I’ve never let her succeed, nor have I kept much contact with Tasha.”

Carola’s chest tightened at his words, a bittersweet ache surging within her.

at galnv.

She could tell—he wasn’t lying. What he was saying now was the truth.

If that was the case, then there was no way he could have held Tasha and claimed he would break things off just to be with her in the past.

The figure she had seen and the voice she had heard back then were, in all likelihood… not Elwood’s at all. She had been deceived!

Carola suddenly felt overwhelmed at the very thought of such a possibility.

“What’s wrong, Carola?” Elwood asked, concern etched in his features as he noticed the color drain from her face.

Carola bit her lip, her eyes fixed on him, and she spoke each word with sharp clarity. “Do you know why I was so utterly disillusioned back then that I married another man, even though I was pregnant with your child? It was because…”

She recounted to Elwood, in painstaking detail, what had happened back then.

When she finished, Elwood’s expression hardened abruptly.

“That’s impossible!” he burst out without hesitation. “There’s no way I could have fallen for Tasha! And even though my memories are gone, I know myself well enough—I could never have been that fickle. Something was definitely off with that matter. And Tasha was probably involved!”

As he spoke, a fragment of memory seemed to flicker across his mind. He looked at Carola and said, “I recall you once said the reason you went to that hotel was that you saw me entering a room there, right?”
