Chapter 1909

Chapter1909

Carola bit down on her lip as she listened, her emotions turning into an even fiercer storm.

Belinda let the matter rest and instead shared a quiet meal with her. The meal passed in warmth and ease between them.

Once they finished eating, Belinda drove Carola back to her home.

When they reached the gate of the Happer family’s residence, Carola unfastened her seatbelt and turned to Belinda. “Belinda, would you like to come in and stay for a while?”

“Maybe another day,” Belinda replied.

“Alright.” Though disappointment flickered across Carola’s face, she kept silent and only gave a small nod.

But just as she was about to step out of the car, Belinda suddenly said, “Wait! Uh… I’m a little thirsty. Maybe I’ll come inside for a glass of water.”

Carola turned to her, her eyes brightening in an instant. “Of course! You can have whatever you like.”

“Alright,” Belinda answered with a soft smile.

In the end, she didn’t want to see Carola disappointed.

After parking, she went inside the house with Carola. The other members of the Happer family were delighted to see Belinda and welcomed her warmly as she stepped in.

Their open enthusiasm left her feeling a little unaccustomed. But she knew, in time, she would learn to embrace it. Because these people were her family.

In Soling, at a residential complex.

“Mr. Lyle Happer, Mr. Mitchell Happer, what brings you here?” A woman stood nervously in her living room, shoulders drawn in as she faced the two men seated on her sofa.

She was the maid who had once testified with Kylee, accusing Belinda of causing Tunny’s death.

Mitchell let his gaze sweep across the room before fixing it on her, a cold smile curving his lips. “Gretchen, you seem to be doing well for yourself. A house in this complex doesn’t come cheap. What happened? Did you strike it rich after resigning?”

At his words, Gretchen Lee’s expression tightened. She couldn’t tell what the brothers meant by showing up like this, asking such pointed questions.

To be cautious, she forced a laugh and answered, “Well, I’m just lucky. The place I lived before was redeveloped, and I received quite a sum. Plus, after working all those years, I had some savings. That’s how I bought this place.”

Mitchell chuckled. “Is that so? But I remember before you left our household, you didn’t own any property in Soling. It doesn’t quite fit your story.”

Biting her lip in nervous dread, Gretchen continued, “Ms. Wright was the one who threw Tunny from the second floor, and afterward, she sent me to find you. That’s the truth. Belinda had no hand in Tunny’s death.”

Her voice trembled slightly. “But Ms. Wright told me to tell you otherwise—to make you believe Belinda killed Tunny on purpose, all because of that stray cat near the mansion. She wanted you to think Belinda forced her hand, hoping Tunny’s death would make space for the stray. In reality, Belinda only once suggested Ms. Wright adopt the stray cat. After she refused, Belinda never mentioned it again. Later on, she even said she would take the cat in herself and bring it back to Owathe once summer break was over.”

At those words, both Lyle’s and Mitchell’s faces darkened. A storm of emotions churned inside them—guilt, remorse, and anger, all colliding in waves.
