Chapter 1898
Even if she hadn’t particularly liked Belinda at the time, watching her suffer under bullying had been unbearable. She couldn’t stop herself from stepping in to help.
Clutching Belinda’s hand tightly, Carola said in a choked voice, “I’m so grateful that I chose to intervene back then. Belinda, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault. How could I have been so blind? My own child was switched, and I didn’t even realize it. I must be the worst mother in the world.”
Her heart writhed with guilt and relentless self-reproach.
Belinda felt her throat tighten with emotion. She gently clasped Carola’s trembling hand. “It’s not your fault. Both of us were victims in this.”
Still, every time Carola’s thoughts wandered to the bitter hardships her daughter had endured, her self-hatred deepened, and she could not stop blaming herself for everything.
Before she could say anything more, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Moments later, Gordon stepped inside.
The scene in the living room made him hesitate for a brief moment. Then, with dawning realization, he understood that Belinda’s true parentage had already been revealed.
Without wasting a second, he strode over to Lucas and handed him two folders. Speaking respectfully, he said, “Mr. Clark, these are the reports.”
“Alright,” Lucas replied, taking them from his hand.
“I’ll take my leave now,” Gordon said, turning and departing from the house.
Lucas opened the folders one after the other.
The first contained the DNA test results between Belinda and Carola. He handed it to Belinda.
Belinda accepted it and immediately flipped to the final page. The result confirmed beyond all doubt that she was indeed Carola’s biological daughter.
But as Lucas’s eyes skimmed the second report, his expression suddenly darkened, and a chilling, oppressive aura seemed to radiate from him.
“Is there something wrong?” Galen asked.
Lucas’s features were shadowed with anger as he handed the report to Belinda. “You should see this.”
Belinda’s hands shook violently as she read through the document.
The Happer family exchanged uneasy glances, confusion clouding every face.
“Lucas, what exactly is going on?” Galen asked.
Drawing in a steadying breath, Lucas began, “Ever since we started investigating Belinda’s origins, I’ve had people closely monitoring Holley, Baker, and Kylee. Recently, my team discovered that Holley purchased a drug on the black market for an exorbitant price.”
He then explained how Holley had attempted to poison Belinda the day before.
“Now the results of the drug analysis are out. It’s a neurotoxin that gradually strips a person of speech and slowly destroys their mental faculties. In heavy doses, within a week, the victim could be reduced to a state of complete idiocy.”
“Damn Holley! That woman is vicious beyond belief!” the Happer family erupted in outrage.
Lyle furrowed his brows deeply and spoke at once. “I know this neurotoxin.”
