Chapter 1913

Chapter1913

Her voice rose sharply as she hurled the words at him.

“No, Belinda, you’ve got it wrong! That’s not what we meant,” Lyle replied in haste. “The reason we’re bringing it up now is that we’ve discovered the truth—we realized we had falsely accused you back then. Just yesterday, Mitchell and I found Gretchen. After questioning her, we finally learned what had really happened to Tunny. We know now that you were innocent, that you had nothing to do with Tunny’s death. It was Kylee who killed it!”

“What did you just say?” Belinda’s eyes widened, her whole body jolting in shock.

Lyle’s expression grew grave as he confirmed, “Yes. Tunny was killed by Kylee. Gretchen told us herself.”

Belinda’s lips parted, but no sound came out. She was frozen for a long moment. The revelation struck her like a bolt of lightning.

She had once thought Tunny’s death might have been an accident, and that Kylee and Gretchen had simply pinned it on her.

But she had never imagined that Kylee had actually been the one who had killed it. That was her cat, after all.

Even if it was only a pet, Tunny had been by her side for more than half a year. To think that Kylee would kill it just to frame her—she couldn’t fathom such cruelty.

Her mind spun back to that summer break when Kylee had come to her, insisting she join her for a visit to the Happer family estate in Soling. She’d said she wanted to stay there for a month and asked her to come along.

At first, Belinda had refused, believing it inappropriate for her to visit the Happer family, given her status.

But Kylee had pressed her relentlessly, growing sulky and angry until, in the end, Belinda reluctantly agreed.

At that time, she had already been married to Lucas. She had informed Lucas and Harold before accompanying Kylee to Soling.

At first, she had felt uneasy, out of place in the Happer household. But after a few days, she discovered the Happer family members were all kind.

They neither looked down on her nor treated her harshly because of her identity.

She even found herself more at ease with the Happer family than with the Wrights.

She had grown fond of them, and in her heart, she secretly envied Kylee for being born into such a family.

In the beginning, both Lyle and Mitchell had treated her with indifference, as though she didn’t exist.

But as the days passed—after nearly twenty—their attitude toward her slowly began to shift for the better.

Everything seemed to be going well… until the tragedy of Tunny’s death shattered it all.

Back then, in the community where the Happers lived, Belinda had come across a frail little stray kitten, no more than three months old.

Moved by pity, she had asked Kylee to adopt the creature, so that Tunny might have a companion from then on.

But Kylee had flatly refused Belinda’s request, not even bothering to hide the disdain in her eyes for the poor stray cat. Because of that, Belinda never mentioned it again. Instead, she quietly slipped outside the mansion every day to feed the little creature. She had even planned to take the tiny cat back with her to Owathe.

After all, she wasn’t truly part of the Happer family, so she had no right to bring the kitten into their household just yet.
