Chapter 1837

“Baker, don’t you think it’s time you explained why you tampered with the paternity test results?”

Baker’s breath hitched.

A cold tightness clamped around his chest, as though invisible hands were wringing the air from his lungs.

The evidence was right in front of him, leaving him no room to deny it.

Kylee lingered at the edge of the room, shrinking into silence, as if hoping the shadows might swallow her whole.

Her only play now was to appear untouched by it all—innocent, oblivious to everything.

Baker drew in a long, shaky breath, then finally spoke.

“I… I just wanted Kylee to live a good life… I remember her telling me—barely even thinking it mattered—that Zaria, Elwood’s daughter, kept prying. Always asking questions about you and your past relationships. The way she said it, it felt strange at the time.”

He paused, his hands curling at his sides.

“Later, I found out Elwood had been digging into Kylee behind the scenes. And I remembered when you came to me pregnant and asked me to marry you—I started connecting the dots. I started wondering if Kylee’s real father might be Elwood.”

A tense swallow followed.

“I had someone tail Elwood, discreetly. When the paternity test came back, it confirmed they weren’t related. I was stunned. But when I thought about the Wright Group’s current dilemma and Elwood’s power… I had a momentary lapse in judgment. I had the results altered. Just like that. I told myself if Elwood believed Kylee was his daughter—and saw how I’d raised her—he’d surely feel grateful and indebted. Maybe enough to rescue the company. And I also thought maybe Kylee really was his daughter. But then… it turned out otherwise.”

He hesitated, eyes flickering toward Carola like a man stepping onto thin ice.

“So I have to ask… Carola, is it possible you were with another man around that time? But you believed you didn’t, so you thought the child you were carrying was Elwood’s?”

Such a statement could explain why he had altered the paternity test results.

Moreover, he needed to plant that doubt in Carola’s mind, making her question who the child’s father was.

He couldn’t let Carola start questioning whether Kylee was her biological daughter.

If that happened, everything would unravel.

But Carola just stared at him, then burst into a cold, brittle laugh.

“That’s not possible!” she snapped.

“Kylee is Elwood’s daughter. There’s no doubt about that in my mind!”

As for Baker’s explanation for tampering with the paternity test results, Carola found it believable.

A selfish man like Baker? He would sell out his conscience in seconds to save a company with his name on it.

Still, the question loomed like a storm cloud—why did the paternity test results say that Kylee wasn’t Elwood’s daughter?

“Mom—” Kylee’s voice trembled as she finally tried to speak.
